Taste is a funny thing. I have disliked sweet potatoes for most of my life. Then about five years ago, I was at a friend’s house for dinner. She served roasted sweet potatoes and suddenly, I had a new favorite food! I did the same thing with mangos. I no longer like chocolate chip cookies (used to be my favorite) and fear I am losing my love of chocolate is well…
Crispy Fries in an Air Fryer

I have tried for years to make oven fries that were crispy and didn’t stick to my pan. Sadly, I have never mastered that particular skill. Last summer, I finally broke down and ordered this family-sized Deluxe Air Fryer from Amazon.

Honestly, my teen girls use the air fryer more than I do. They love to come home from school and make fresh french fries. The fries fill the house with such an amazing smell! I now prefer the taste of sweet potato fries over regular fries (who am I?) I am so happy to have a way to make them and finally get them crispy!

Pro Tip for Cripsy Sweet Potato Fries
If you want perfect fries (sweet potato or otherwise) you want to soak them in water for an hour before cooking, then pat dry. I am not sure why this works (I am sure there is something cool and Science-y behind it) but this will make all the difference in the finished fries. DON’T SKIP THIS!

This extra step is easy to do and well worth your time to get perfect sweet fries in your air fryer.

Air Fryer Sweet Potato Fries
These airy fryer sweet potato fries are perfect! Crispy on the outside, hot and chewy on the inside.

- 3-4 Sweet Potatoes
- 1/4 cup vegetable oil

- salt and pepper to taste
Instructions
Peel and chop sweet potatoes into 1/4 inch fries
Soak in water for one hour
Pat dry.
Toss fries to coat in oil
Cook one layer at 375 degrees for six minutes. Shake fries and cook for six more minutes. Shake fries and add salt, pepper, and parmesan, cook for 3-5 more minutes.
Serve hot with fresh parmesan sprinkled on top and buffalo sauce on the side.

These sweet potato fries pair perfectly with my Spicy Lettuce Wrapped Buffalo Burgers.

I like to dip these in buffalo sauce. Just combine 1/2 cup blue cheese dressing with 1/4 cup Frank’s Hot Sauce.
Best side dish ever!
Do you need the oil? I thought that’s what the wonder about air fryers is…you didn’t need to use oil…?
Have you tried it with and without oil? I’m very curious about the difference and to see if they are still crisp with soaking only and no oil. Thanks for posting, I’m still wondering if we should get one of these.
From my understanding, you do still need oil, but just a small amount. And instead of being soaked/fried in oil, they are lightly coated, but that’s it, so you are getting much less. Does that make sense?
yes! Thank you. 🙂
