Robot Books and Activities Your Kids Will Love

Do you have a robot loving kid? I remember my brothers and myself going through the Sears Christmas catalog and dreaming of getting a robot to clean our rooms and do our chores. Sadly, here is it, 2019, and I still don’t have a robot to do my chores (unless you count my washing machine, dryer, Instant Pot, etc…) This post is chock-full of robot activities and books your kids are sure to love!

Robot Books and Activities

Robb-Sauce is a great jumping off place for robot activities.

ROBO-SAUCE is a fun little book about…you guessed it, robots. More than that, it is a light-hearted fun story about a boy who wishes he was a robot. I can absolutely guarantee this book does not end the way you think it will!

Robot Activities to Pair with Robo-Sauce

This book was so much fun to read I started looking around for robot-themed projects for my kids to do. I’ll have an entire list of ideas at the end, but let me tell you my kids have been obsessed with making ROBO SAUCE themed shrinky-dinks. Do you remember shrinky-dinks for when you were  a kid? You can buy the shrink film on Amazon. I bought this huge pack of 50, because I knew my kid would love it! And I bought this pack of Sharpies as well (Tilly squealed with delight when she saw them!)

In case you aren’t familiar with shrinky-dinks or shrink paper, it is plastic like paper that shrinks about 50% when heated. What’s so cool about this is, you can make very detailed drawings that look amazing when shrunk! One word of warning: you do need a bit of sand paper to roughen up the surface so the markers don’t smear or you can buy the matte shrink paper.Robot Activities you kids will love. Make detailed tiny robots with shrinky dinks!

Other Great Robot Books for Kids

The Wild Robot by Peter Brown is a quick and easy read for kids.

The Wild Robot by Peter Brown

Apollo read this book earlier this year and really enjoyed it. This books had short chapters and is a quick, fun read.

Boy + Bot by Ame Dyckman is a fun robot book for kids.

Boy + Bot by Ame Dyckman

One day, a boy and a robot meet in the woods. They play. They have fun.
But when Bot gets switched off, Boy thinks he’s sick. The usual remedies—applesauce, reading a story—don’t help, so Boy tucks the sick Bot in, then falls asleep…

Clink was a state-of-the-art robot with the dazzling ability to make toast and play music at the same time. But that was many years ago.

Clink by Kelly DiPucchio pairs well with these robot activities.

Now kids want snazzier robots who do things like play baseball and bake cookies. So day after day, Clink sits on a shelf and sadly watches as his friends leave with their new owners. He almost gives up on ever finding a home—until the day Clink spies a boy who just might be able to be the right one for him. . . .

I found one recently and have been giving it to great nieces and nephews as my boys are both over 20. The Book with No Pictures by B J Novak. It’s exactly what it says it is, be prepared to use your vocal acting skills when reading this one.

I also loved NO David by David Shannon, my youngest is named David, so he thought it was written just for him.

You can use number 4 plastic (I think that’s it…do a web search) as shrinky dink plastic, too. We did it. It worked…not quite as nice as the film, but FREE (and green, although I’m just plain cheap…lol) As for books… I can’t stand the Disney books based on movies. They try to cram a 2 hour movie story, with the characters, into like 15 pages, and they often don’t flow, skip large parts of the story, and are just generally poorly written, in my personal opinion. (If someone else likes them, please don’t take this personally!) Dr. Seuss is still a personal favorite of mine to read…I love the rhyming and metering and silly words….

I just hid that stupid “On the Night You Were Born” book this weekend for gifting or donating. It just seems like a great way to turn your kid into a crazy narcissist to me. Does that make ME the crazy one? I honestly don’t get why people like that book so much.
